It is filled to the brim with hooks, interesting twists and turns, outstanding musicianship, and practically anything a music fan could want. These men have an almost instinctual understanding of good song pacing here, and even with the album being 50 fucking minutes long and including three instrumental interludes (some of this writer's most hated metal tropes), it manages to be engaging practically the whole way through. On a compositional level, Blues for the Red Sun is nothing short of brilliant. Iron Butterfly wishes they could write a tune this sleek. They are by no means a one trick pony, to our fortune, as demonstrated by songs like "Apothecaries' Weight" a dreamlike, marching jam session where guitarist Josh Homme really gets to show off his chops as a six stringer. Kyuss here are excellent at carrying you through elegantly brutal transitions between sections of a song, making sure that each new guitar groove and drum beat drops on your head like a ton of bricks. And then you get hit with "I hate slow songs" and BOOM, instant riff murder. "Thong Song", on the other hand, starts off lazy and drunk, like someone making a bit of a blues pisstake, with some fantastic gravely singing to follow the silly rhythm. The beginning of "Freedom Run", with its creepy, chanting whispering of the title is like something out of an unpleasantly intense acid trip, which is then followed by a groove of that stomps harded than the Colossus of Rhodes given life. It takes Black Sabbth and not only does it mix it with punk, but it makes it fucking work.įor as contentious and somewhat low brow the stoner rock label might be, this is definitely some trippy music. The album burns with the lightning-in-a-bottle combination of youthful energy and unrestrained talent and cretivity. Shining, monolithick, chaotic yet majestic at once, and projecting warmth on your skin, while being so explosively powerful that invoking a likeness to a gigantic ball of nuclear fire floating in space is not madness. For indeed, this sounds like a blues composed in the name of a gigantic star.
